WAG Culture and Cardi B, Stefon Diggs | Street and Sports Tea

Today’s Street and Sports Tea is about Stefon Diggs, WAG Culture and why Cardi B would need a complete upgrade in order to be respected and survive as a WAG, which is a cutthroat social circle. Subscribe to Black American Network to never miss an episode of Street and Sports Tea; let’s talk about it:

Page Six reports tension between Cardi B and the wives and girlfriends of the New England Patriots. Sources describe her behavior as “a lot to deal with” and it takes attention away from the team. Neither Cardi B nor the Patriots’ have issued a statement confirming or denying this Page Six report.

WAGs are expected to follow informal, traditional principles. In WAG Culture, the philosophy is players first, whether that’s your boyfriend, fiancé or husband. You are expected to play a supportive, background role. Cardi B’s celebrity is not the problem for the Patriots WAGs. It is her need to be the center of attention.

Cardi B commonly associates herself with the Blood gang, therefore her authentic behavior does not align with the reasonable expectations of other wives and girlfriends. Cardi B is both a wife and a girlfriend, not yet divorced from Offset, yet publicly dating Diggs. Both Offset and Diggs are Black American men who share children with Cardi B, a woman of Hispanic and Caribbean descent.

Black American women usually enter the elite WAG circle with zero prep or understanding of the culture, including how political sports can be. This includes Black American women who met these athletes while being bartenders, exotic dancers or students. So, let’s chat about WAG 101s in case you ever become one.  Subscribe to Black American Network to never miss an episode of Street and Sports Tea.

First things first, found a charity. You are expected to attend charity events and to present your partner in a charitable light. This includes team events or activities. Most WAGs have their own charity or are closely involved with a charity that’s personal to them. Therefore, don’t reinvent the wheel, follow in their footsteps.

Another WAG 101 you should follow is to earn a degree. The truth is that athletes can suffer career ending injuries and commonly do. This is one of the many reasons why you should earn your degree. Also, have your professional athlete boyfriend or husband pay your tuition and other school expenses. With both a charitable foundation and a degree, you have the ability to not only survive WAG circles but can become the HBIC of the circle itself.

Let’s wind down with a book recommendation; Shanghai Girls: Uncensored and Unsentimental by Mina Hanbury-Tenison. This is a cheeky yet straightforward guide on how women in Asian cultures date men of high status and resources. Take notes on how to benefit from a starter boo to how these women behave.

Finally, let’s talk about what Cardi B did correctly; she did not seek out validation. This might’ve disrupted a few WAGs who were excited to humble Cardi’s outgoing, sometimes outrageous personality. Surviving this social circle is not about acceptance, but it is about leverage and optics.

This is no fun to admit, but many Black American women desire to become WAGs. As rapping and sports are a way to exit dangerous neighborhoods or households for many young Black American men, becoming the girlfriend or “baby mama” to these same men is an exit out of poverty for many Black American women. I am not here to encourage or judge but instead educate because the data shows that this is the reality for a large number of Black Americans.

Do you think the WAGs were tripping? Or could Cardi B conducted herself better as a WAG, or should I say a former WAG? The streets are saying Cardi B and Stefon broke up because of the baby mama of his first-born son. Diggs threw a slight subliminal, posting a photo of himself with the audio of Brent Fiyaz song, “Rolling Stone”. Comment below if you know what a Rolling Stone is, or if your Papa was one himself.

That’s the Streets and Sports Tea for today. Thanks for tuning in! Until next time, peace.
